Overview
Oil and gas projects are large, complex and unforgiving. They combine demanding technology, remote locations, multiple contractors and strict safety requirements, and industry reviews show that many still overrun their budgets and schedules. Better project management is one of the most effective ways to protect value. This course gives participants a practical, industry-specific grounding in managing oil and gas projects across their life cycle. It explains stage-gated project development, front-end loading and the decisions taken at each gate, then covers scope definition, work breakdown structures, scheduling, cost estimating and control, risk management, procurement and contracting, and stakeholder management. Earned value, change control and project reporting are covered in detail, along with the transition from construction to commissioning and operations. Examples are drawn from upstream, midstream and downstream projects.
Objectives
- Describe the stage-gate project life cycle and front-end loading
- Define scope and build a work breakdown structure
- Develop and analyse project schedules
- Prepare cost estimates and control costs using earned value
- Identify, assess and manage project risks
- Select contracting strategies and manage contractors
- Apply change control, reporting and stakeholder management
- Plan the transition to commissioning and operations
Who should attend
Project managers and engineers, planners and cost engineers, discipline engineers moving into project roles, and managers who sponsor or oversee capital projects.
Training methodology
The course runs a single project case, a gas processing facility expansion, through every stage of the life cycle. Participants define its scope, build a WBS and schedule, prepare an estimate, assess risks and choose a contracting strategy, then track progress with earned value as the project encounters changes. Lessons from successful and troubled industry projects are discussed throughout. The approach is consistent with recognised bodies of knowledge, and the week ends with team presentations and an assessment.
