Overview

A turnaround is one of the largest and riskiest events in the life of a plant. In a few weeks, thousands of tasks are carried out by large contractor workforces under intense time pressure, while the plant is in an unusual and often hazardous state. Overruns in time or cost, poor-quality work and safety incidents are common, and their effects are felt for years. This course explains how successful turnarounds are planned and executed. Participants learn the phases of turnaround management, from early strategy and scope development through detailed planning, contracting, pre-turnaround work and execution, to start-up and post-event review. The programme emphasises scope control, work package quality, critical path scheduling, safety and quality management on site, cost control and the handover back to operations.

Objectives

  • Describe the phases and milestones of turnaround management
  • Develop and control turnaround scope
  • Prepare high-quality work packages
  • Build and analyse turnaround schedules using critical path methods
  • Plan contracting strategy, logistics and site organisation
  • Manage safety, quality and cost during execution
  • Plan safe shutdown, handover and start-up
  • Conduct post-turnaround reviews that improve future events

Who should attend

Turnaround managers and coordinators, maintenance and operations managers, planners and schedulers, project engineers, inspection leads and contractor supervisors.

Training methodology

The course follows a turnaround from strategy to post-event review using a realistic case plant. Participants challenge a draft scope list, prepare a work package, build and compress a critical path schedule, and develop a site organisation and logistics plan. Daily execution scenarios, such as discovery work and late materials, test decision making under pressure. Benchmarks and lessons from refinery and gas plant turnarounds are discussed throughout. Teams present their turnaround plan on the final day, followed by an assessment.
