Overview

Most maintenance work is not difficult technically. What makes the difference between an efficient maintenance organisation and a reactive one is planning and scheduling: having the right job, the right parts, the right people and the right access ready at the right time. Industry studies consistently show that well-planned work takes far less time than unplanned work, yet many organisations still run on breakdowns and daily firefighting. This course teaches the principles and tools of professional maintenance planning and scheduling. Participants learn how work requests become well-defined work orders, how job plans and estimates are prepared, how materials and permits are coordinated, and how weekly and daily schedules are built and protected. The course also covers backlog management, key performance indicators and the effective use of computerised maintenance management systems.

Objectives

  • Explain the principles and benefits of maintenance planning and scheduling
  • Manage the work order process from request to close-out
  • Prepare job plans with accurate scope, resources and estimates
  • Coordinate materials, permits and operations support
  • Build and protect weekly and daily maintenance schedules
  • Manage backlog and prioritisation effectively
  • Measure performance using planning and scheduling KPIs
  • Use CMMS data to improve planning quality

Who should attend

Maintenance planners and schedulers, maintenance supervisors and superintendents, reliability engineers, CMMS administrators and operations coordinators.

Training methodology

The course follows a week in the life of a maintenance department. Participants process a batch of work requests, prioritise them, write job plans with estimates and material lists, and build a weekly schedule against available labour and operational constraints. Disruptions such as breakdowns and late materials are introduced mid-exercise so participants practise protecting the schedule. CMMS screens and real KPI dashboards are discussed in groups. The course closes with a planning exercise and assessment.
