Overview
Well integrity failures can release hydrocarbons, contaminate aquifers and put people at risk, and they are often discovered only after years of gradual deterioration. As well stocks age, managing integrity has become a core responsibility for operators everywhere. This course explains how to keep wells safe from design through operation to abandonment. Participants learn the barrier philosophy behind standards such as ISO 16530 and NORSOK D-010, how to define primary and secondary barrier envelopes, and how to verify barrier elements by testing and monitoring. The programme covers annulus pressure management, sustained casing pressure diagnosis, corrosion and erosion of tubulars, wellhead and valve maintenance, and risk-based classification of wells. It also shows how to build a well integrity management system with clear roles, data, key performance indicators and assurance.
Objectives
- Explain well barrier philosophy and the requirements of ISO 16530
- Define primary and secondary barrier envelopes for different well types
- Verify barrier elements through testing and monitoring
- Manage annulus pressures and diagnose sustained casing pressure
- Assess and classify well integrity risk
- Plan remediation for wells with integrity issues
- Establish the elements of a well integrity management system
- Apply integrity principles to suspension and abandonment
Who should attend
Well integrity engineers, production and completion engineers, drilling and workover engineers, well services supervisors and asset managers responsible for well stocks.
Training methodology
Barrier concepts are taught using well barrier schematics for producers, injectors, gas lift wells and suspended wells, which participants then draw for their own examples. Annulus pressure data, valve test records and integrity logs from real wells are analysed in teams to diagnose problems and propose actions. Case histories of integrity incidents show how failures developed and how they could have been detected. Participants also review a sample integrity management procedure and identify gaps. A final assessment completes the course.
