Overview

Onshore pipelines move most of the world's oil and gas from fields to processing plants, refineries, ports and markets. Building and operating them safely requires a clear understanding of codes, hydraulics, materials, construction methods and the many interfaces with land, communities and the environment. This course takes participants through the full life of an onshore pipeline. It starts with route selection, design codes such as ASME B31.4 and B31.8, wall thickness and material selection, then covers hydraulic design, pumping and compression stations, and valves and pigging facilities. The construction section explains right-of-way preparation, welding and inspection, coating, lowering-in, crossings and hydrostatic testing. The final part addresses commissioning, operation, control and leak detection, maintenance and integrity, giving participants a complete and practical picture of pipeline engineering.

Objectives

  • Apply pipeline design codes to route selection and wall thickness design
  • Perform basic hydraulic calculations for liquid and gas pipelines
  • Specify pump and compressor stations, valves and pigging facilities
  • Describe pipeline construction methods and quality control
  • Plan hydrostatic testing, commissioning and start-up
  • Explain pipeline operation, control and leak detection
  • Outline maintenance and integrity activities for operating pipelines

Who should attend

Pipeline engineers, project and construction engineers, inspection personnel, pipeline operations staff and engineers from related disciplines joining pipeline projects.

Training methodology

The course follows a sample pipeline project from concept to operation. Participants select a route on maps, calculate wall thickness to code, size the line and stations hydraulically, and plan the hydrotest. Construction photographs and videos show each stage on site, and inspection records illustrate typical quality issues. Operational topics are supported by SCADA screens and leak detection examples. Group work culminates in a project summary presented on the final day, followed by an assessment.
