Overview

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and the oil and gas industry is one of its largest human-made sources. Reducing methane emissions and routine flaring is now among the fastest and most cost-effective climate actions available, and it is increasingly required by regulators, investors and gas buyers. Much of the lost gas also has commercial value. This course shows how operators can find, measure and reduce methane and flaring across their assets. Participants learn the main emission sources, from venting and flaring to fugitive leaks, pneumatic devices and incomplete combustion, and how they are quantified using engineering estimates and direct measurement. The programme then covers leak detection and repair programmes, technology options for reducing venting and flaring, gas utilisation projects, reporting frameworks such as OGMP 2.0, and how to build a credible reduction plan.

Objectives

  • Identify the main sources of methane emissions and flaring
  • Quantify emissions using engineering estimates and measurement
  • Design and run a leak detection and repair programme
  • Evaluate technologies to reduce venting, flaring and fugitives
  • Assess the economics of gas recovery and utilisation projects
  • Apply reporting frameworks including OGMP 2.0
  • Build a credible methane and flaring reduction plan

Who should attend

Environmental and sustainability professionals, production and facilities engineers, operations managers, HSE advisers and staff responsible for emissions reporting.

Training methodology

Participants build an emissions inventory for a sample upstream asset, identifying sources on process diagrams and quantifying them with recognised methods. Measurement technologies, from optical gas imaging cameras to satellite and aerial surveys, are explained with real survey results. Teams then screen reduction options using cost and abatement data and assemble them into a phased plan. International case studies show what leading operators have achieved. The course concludes with plan presentations and an assessment.
