Overview
Fire and gas systems are the eyes and ears of a facility's emergency defences. They detect flammable and toxic releases, flames and smoke, raise the alarm and initiate actions such as shutdown, isolation, ventilation changes and the release of fire suppression. When detectors are poorly placed or the system is badly maintained, releases go unnoticed until it is too late. This course covers the full scope of fire and gas protection in oil, gas and process facilities. Participants study fire and explosion hazards, detector technologies and their limitations, detector mapping and coverage, cause and effect logic, and the integration of fire and gas systems with emergency shutdown. The programme also covers active and passive fire protection, firewater systems, testing and maintenance, and performance standards for these safety critical elements.
Objectives
- Explain fire and explosion hazards in hydrocarbon facilities
- Describe flammable gas, toxic gas, flame and smoke detection technologies
- Apply detector mapping principles to achieve effective coverage
- Develop cause and effect logic for fire and gas systems
- Describe integration with ESD, HVAC and fire suppression systems
- Specify active and passive fire protection measures
- Plan testing, maintenance and performance assurance
Who should attend
Instrument, safety and fire protection engineers, process safety engineers, operations and maintenance supervisors, and project engineers responsible for fire and gas systems.
Training methodology
Technical principles are illustrated with detector hardware, facility layouts and incident footage. Participants review detector layouts on real plot plans, carry out a simplified geographic and scenario-based coverage assessment, and build a cause and effect matrix for a process module. Fire protection topics are supported by firewater and deluge calculations. Maintenance and test records are reviewed to identify weaknesses in assurance. A comprehensive design review exercise and assessment close the course.
