Overview
Casing and cement form the backbone of every well. Together they isolate formations, contain pressure, support the wellhead and protect the environment for the entire life of the well and beyond abandonment. Design errors or poor cement jobs can lead to lost wells, sustained casing pressure or, in the worst cases, blowouts. This course covers casing design and cementing practice in an integrated way. Participants learn how pore pressure and fracture gradient determine casing setting depths, how burst, collapse and tension loads are calculated, and how to select grades and connections. The second half covers cement chemistry, slurry design, placement techniques, mud removal, job execution and evaluation, along with remedial cementing. The emphasis is on practical engineering decisions that deliver durable well integrity.
Objectives
- Select casing setting depths from pore pressure and fracture gradient data
- Calculate burst, collapse and axial loads for each casing string
- Select casing grades, weights and connections
- Design cement slurries for given well conditions
- Plan cement placement, mud removal and centralisation
- Evaluate cement jobs and plan remedial work
- Apply well barrier principles to casing and cement design
Who should attend
Drilling and well engineers, cementing engineers, drilling supervisors and wellsite representatives, and completion engineers involved in well design and construction.
Training methodology
The course follows a single well from pressure prediction to cement evaluation. Participants calculate setting depths, design the casing strings for each section using spreadsheet tools, and then design and plan the cement jobs for the same well. Cement bond logs and job charts from real operations are interpreted in groups. Failure investigations illustrate how small design or execution errors led to integrity problems. The week ends with a design review and assessment.
