Selection and Sizing of Separation Equipment

About the Course

The many types of separation equipment that are frequently found in oil and gas production facilities are covered in this course. This course does not cover fractionation or produced water treatment equipment. Based on operating conditions and separation performance requirements, you will discover where various types of separation equipment are employed. Process flow diagrams (PFDs) from actual industrial facilities will frequently be mentioned. Additionally, common operating issues and their fixes will be covered. Calculation-intensive exercises are included all throughout the course as well. Please be informed that if you have already taken the PF-4 Oil Production and Processing Facilities course, you are not required to attend the PF-42 course due to content overlap.

Target Audience

Process or facilities engineers that require expertise in separation design and troubleshooting.

Course Objectives

  •  Different separation technologies used in the oil and gas sector, and their applications Performance capabilities for separating the various sorts of equipment
  • How to size the various kinds of separation machinery
  • How to fix and debottleneck separating machinery
  • How to measure the weight of separators and compute wall thickness controls and instruments for separating equipment

Course Outlines

  •  Properties of fluids and phase behavior phases of phase separation
  • Slug catchers, conventional separators (horizontal and vertical), scrubbers, compact separators, and filter separators/coalescing filters are examples of gas-liquid separation equipment.
  • Internals of the separator: baffles, weirs, mist extractors, intake devices, etc.
  • Emulsions
  • Equipment for separating oil from water: traditional 3-phase separators, freewater knockouts, and wash tanks
  •  Equipment for oil treatment and desalting, primarily electrostatic coalescers Filters for liquid-liquid coalescence
  • Mechanical design considerations: pressure vessel codes, estimation of vessel weight and wall thickness, choice of materials, and relief requirements
  • perational difficulties
