Operations of Crude Oil Pipelines

About the Course

In order to operate and maintain onshore crude oil and liquid pipeline systems that maximize life cycle reliability, employee, public, and environmental safety, as well as operational cost effectiveness, this course uses case studies and industry best practices. It emphasizes open dialogue and problem-solving methods that can be used with pipelines for crude, HVLs (High Volatility Liquids), and refined products, as well as the supporting infrastructure. The course seeks to enhance management and engineering staff communication as well as the operation's profitability.

Target Audience

Personnel working in pipeline operations who need to be familiar with onshore liquid pipeline and terminal systems, as well as the typical operational issues that may occur and the operational strategies employed to address them. Additionally appropriate for field engineers, metering technicians, lead supervisors, and area managers, as well as maintenance staff, who would benefit from having a working knowledge of pipeline systems.

 Course Objectives

Participants will pick up skills in:

  •  Apply legal requirements, industry standards, and best practices that regulate and direct the operation and upkeep of pipeline facilities (such as PHSMA 195, ASME B31.4, API-1173, and others).
  • Explain the fluid characteristics and behavior of crude oils, the behavior of wax, the correlations between those variables, and the usage of DRA in crude oil pipelines.
  • Explain pipeline hydraulics, pipeline pressure gradients, and system capacity using mechanical and physical principles.
  • Identify the MOP, surge, overpressure causes, and mitigation strategies used in liquid pipelines.
  • Describe the pipeline's facilities, including its pump stations, filtration, metering, and LACT units, as well as its sample, testing, pigging equipment, tank terminals, and truck/rail loading facilities.
  • Describe the activities involved in commissioning, purging/filling, startup, halting, pigging and pig receiver operations, measuring, and sampling for liquid pipelines.
  • Determine the primary sources of containment loss and appropriate mitigation strategies, including corrosion, environmental cracking, overpressure, third-party damage, and human error.
  •  To be more prepared for compliance audits, review the regulatory compliance standards for CFR 49, Part 195.
  • Investigate emergency response options for spills and containment loss

Course Outlines

  •  Overview of the systems used to transport crude oil
  • the scope and applicability of industry codes and regulations Wax, DRA, and crude oils, as well as fluid behavior
  • An overview of pipeline hydraulic analysis and hydraulic gradients
  • Pipeline pumps: construction, use, seal technology, and seal leak detection mechanisms for protecting against overpressure and pipeline surge
  • Facilities for pipelines, including filters, pressure regulators, and pigging tools
  • Tanks, truck/rail loading, metering, sampling, and proving facilities at terminals Pigging objectives, procedures, and actions
  • pkeep and repairs to pipelines Overview and prevention of corrosion Leak detection techniques CFR 49, Part 195 assessment of terminology and documentation needs Planning for emergency response, handling spills, and dealing with containment loss
