Fundamentals of Instrumentation and Controls for Facilities Engineers

About the Course

This course is intended to hasten the development of new Facilities Instrumentation and Control Engineers by applying fundamental instrumentation and control engineering principles to the design and operation of oil and gas facilities. Participants will gain knowledge about field measurement devices, valves and actuators, documentation, programmable logic controllers, power supply, SCADA, DCS, SIS, hazardous areas, and installation techniques through the use of individual and group problem solving.

"I want to thank you for the excellent IC-3 course training. In order to install some fancy instruments, I had to yank fiber optic wire for the first time. I'm currently finishing it up. I was able to organize and supervise the installation more actively than in the past thanks to your teaching. My memory of some of the knowledge shocked even me, and our instrument technicians appreciated having someone in our group of process engineers who could at least make an effort to communicate in their language. I might end up with all the instrumentation projects that come to our tiny research facility if I'm not careful. Thanks!" Engineer, Process

Target Audience

Facilities and project engineers as well as recently graduated electrical, controls, and instrument engineers (0–5 years) who need to strengthen their fundamental knowledge of instrumentation and control systems used in oil and gas facilities.

Course Objectives

  • Principles of operation and requirements for field measurement equipment, such as level, pressure, temperature, and flow
  • Control loops, control valves, shutdown valves, actuators, and transducers are final components and actuators.
  • ISA symbology, the development of instrument and I/O lists, P&ID symbols and instrument tags, loop and logic diagrams, hazards and recommended practices
  • Analog/discrete inputs and outputs as well as additional signals like thermocouple, RTD, pulse, and digital communications have different signal types and wiring needs.
  • Functions, restrictions, and designs of common control systems for PLC and DCS systems, as well as information on programming techniques such ladder logic and function blocks
  • Basics of process control with a focus on control loops, kinds, and configurations for typical oil and gas processing machinery, including separators, pumps, distillation towers, filters, contactors, compressors, heat exchangers, and fired heaters
  • Knowing the PID algorithm, tweaking the loop, and using advanced process control strategies including feed forward, cascade, selective, and ratio control
  • SCADA stands for supervisory control and data acquisition. Telemetry, RTUs, the internet, and web-based communications will all be part of the systems.
  • Common networking technologies like Ethernet, Modbus, and Fieldbus Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) risk management technologies and architecture
  • The principles, lingo, and implementation of equipment protection techniques, hazardous area classification standards, and installation specifications for NEC and IEC projects

Course Outlines

  • the fundamentals of wiring and control signals Basics of control systems
  • equipment for field measurement regulating and shut-off valves
  • Electronic devices that can be programmed (PLC, DCS, SIS, SCADA) Networking of control systems
  • Common oil and gas equipment instrumentation and control methods Infrastructure and installation requirements
  • Documentation and drawings for IE&C projects installations for hazardous areas
