DWE, or Deepwater Well Engineering

About the Course

This five-day course aims to advance knowledge of the engineering capabilities specific to the deep water environment and well design. Participants receive great insight into the job of a DW drilling engineer as a project manager while actively participating in the skills and activities necessary to develop a well plan that is cost-effective. Prerequisites for the course include 3+ years of drilling experience and 2+ years of work experience in a well planning capacity for onshore or shallow water applications.

Target Audience

experienced drilling engineers, drilling managers, and other petroleum specialists who are new to deep water (DW) drilling and who will be in charge of planning DW wells or overseeing DW wells that are not being operated. As a prerequisite, the ten day Well Design and Engineering (WDE) course or its equivalent is strongly advised.

 Course Objectives

Participants will pick up skills in:

  •  Analyze and use offset well data crucial for DW planning and well design. Recognize and manage technology, processes, and design approaches specific to the DW environment.
  • Determine the main problems and dangers associated with floating operations and rig choice.
  • Control difficult logistical and specialized equipment/supply chain problems
  • Explain the probable effects of geohazards like hydrates, salt, tar, shallow gas and water flows.
  • Determine the well-control limitations and the kick tolerance
  • Develop expertise in certain aspects of casing design, such as how metocean environmental conditions affect the design of structural pipes, choosing the right casing point, designing for annular pressure accumulation, and using the US GOM Well Containment Screening Tool.
  • Consider DW cementing technologies and choose the best option for a DW well.
  • Create plans for landing strings, BHAs, and DW drill strings.
  •  Make clear the challenges with well design for the riserless and post-riser phases of well building.
  • Define drilling fluids for DW wells and identify any special problems.
  • Develop mitigations for the well delivery risks as well as backup strategies.
  • In good design, take abandonment requirements into account.

 Course Outlines

  •  Machinery and drilling rigs that float specific difficulties in deepwater shallow risks
  • Deepwater cycle of planning Submarine BOP gear Control problems with subsea wells
  • Design of structural pipes for bending No-riser drilling
  • Considerations for casing shoe depth in DW a development of annular pressure in the casing strings Regulatory specifications
  • Process for subsea cementing trees and underwater wellheads Hydrates
  • difficulties with drilling fluid in DW
  • Designing a drillstring with slip crushing designing a landing string
  • sand mining
  • Relieved, well-prepared for DW DW dangers
  • abandoning underwater wells
  • nderstanding the fundamentals of Managed Pressure drilling and different cutting-edge technologies
