Basic and Useful Elements of Produced Water Treatment

 About the Course

In upstream oil and gas operations, produced water treatment is a topic covered in this course. The physical characteristics and composition of produced water are covered. The requirements for water quality for several disposal techniques, such as onshore surface discharge, offshore discharge to the sea, and reinjection for disposal or waterflood, are covered. It is addressed how to monitor and ensure compliance with regulations using analytical techniques. Along with treatment technology, practical guidelines for choosing and using standard water treatment equipment are offered. Representative process flow diagrams show how to choose equipment and show how things are laid out and designed. Options for chemical treatment are also taken into account.

The entire course was packed with information that is applicable to the field and is valuable. - American Facilities Engineer

Target Audience

Facilities that handle and manage produced water must be designed, operated, and maintained by managers, engineers, chemists, and senior operations staff. Participants in this course will get an awareness of the technical considerations necessary to choose, design, maintain, and troubleshoot produced water equipment.

Course Objectives

  •  How produced water compositions impact the design and effectiveness of water treatment systems How to compute common Scale Indices and interpret provided water analytical data
  • How emulsions develop and impact problems with water treatment
  • What can be done about how Total Suspended Solids (TSS) influences water quality?
  • What level of water quality is necessary for injection disposal, surface or overboard disposal, or for beneficial use?
  • The regulatory criteria for disposing of offshore water and what an NPDES permit entails What analytical techniques actually measure and how to pick the right technique
  • How to enhance the functionality of separators, clarifier tanks, CPIs, hydrocyclones, flotation cells, and bed filtration.
  •  The most frequent causes of issues with water treatment and how to identify and fix them Common PFDs that are used to show operational problems

Course Outlines

  •  An introduction to concerns and technology in water treatment Characterization and chemistry of produced water
  • defining and describing emulsions that affect water treatment and quality
  • requirements for water quality for surface or injection disposal, NPDES licenses, and analytical techniques Technologies for basic water treatment, including separators, hydrocyclones, and CPIs
  • Induced gas flotation for secondary water treatment
  • Technologies for tertiary water treatment include media and membrane filtration.
  • Utilizing and treating chemicals
  • Field observations and diagnostic testing
  • identifying and addressing problems with water treatment based on real-world experiences
